Iron Deficiency is Common and Detrimental

Millions of people may be living with iron deficiency without ever knowing it.
The symptoms are often dismissed as everyday stress or exhaustion: fatigue, brain fog, hair thinning, restless legs, shortness of breath, and difficulty concentrating. But according to Dr. George Goshua, physician-scientist and Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology and Hematology at Yale School of Medicine, these symptoms may point to one of the most underdiagnosed medical conditions in the United States.
Dr. Goshua explains why iron deficiency is frequently missed for years, particularly in women and pregnant patients. One major reason is that standard blood tests often only detect anemia, which can appear much later in the disease process. Many patients may already have severely depleted iron stores long before anemia is identified.
